The winemaker
The history of Château Larrivet Haut-Brion
After being called Château de Canolle, then La Rivette, then Brion-Larrivet, Château Larrivet Haut-Brion obtained its definitive name in 1874. It was then owned by Ernest Laurent, a merchant in the Place de Bordeaux. In 1893, it passed into the hands of Bordeaux shipowners, the Conseil brothers. They began to develop the vineyard, which now comprised 50 hectares of vines. In 1898, the Féret guide classified the Château's wines as an "exceptional growth" in the Graves region.
During the wine crisis of 1930, the vines were ravaged. It wasn't until 1941 and the new owner of Château Larrivet Haut-Brion, Monsieur Guillemaud, that the vineyard was restored to its former glory. He kept the château until 1982.
In 1987, the new owners - the Gervoson family - set about enlarging and improving the vineyard. By this time, the vineyard had been reduced to 17 hectares and the park to 13 hectares. The acquisition of new plantations brought the vineyard to 72.5 hectares, with 61 hectares dedicated to red wine and 11.5 hectares to white wine. Today, Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is still owned by the Gervoson family and its vineyards cover 75 hectares.
The Château Larrivet Haut-Brion vineyard
The soils of Château Larrivet Haut-Brion are characteristic of the middle terrace of the Bordeaux Graves. Its hilltops benefit from exceptional sun exposure and are perfectly drained, thanks to the strongly gravelly soil with a sandy or clay matrix.
For the red wine, Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is planted with 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. For the white wine, it is composed of 80% Sauvignon and 20% Semillon. The average age of the vines is 30 years for the red wine and 25 years for the white wine. Harvesting is carried out by hand in crates, as well as mechanically.
