The winemaker
The Château Larcis-Ducasse, appreciated since the 16th century
Farmed since the 16th century, the estate already enjoyed a fine reputation, despite a reputation for under-performance, notably due to the complexity of the soil. Owned by the Gratiot-Alphandéry family, descendants of the Raba family who have owned the property since the 18th century, the estate is masterfully managed by Nicolas Thienpont, a renowned winemaker with a proven track record with other Saint Émilion Grands Crus Classés such as Château Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse and Château Berliquet.
The Château Larcis-Ducasse vineyard
With Merlot as the main grape variety on the 11-hectare vineyard, the soil harbors a particular complexity that gives Château Larcis-Ducasse its character. Between clay, fertile alluvium and limestone, the care given to the grapes and their growth is all the more precise. Rigorous soil tillage, the installation of companion plants and green harvesting are all part of the menu for high-quality Merlot and Cabernet Franc berries, which are expertly transformed into 34,000 bottles of red wine every year.
The wines of Château Larcis-Ducasse
The Grand Cru Classé Château Larcis-Ducasse is therefore mainly a Merlot, enhanced by Cabernet Franc, giving it fruity aromas transcending the vintages, and alternately accompanied by spicy or more floral notes. But if this wine is the undisputed jewel of the estate, we mustn't forget Murmure, a lesser-known but equally high-quality Bordeaux, also made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
