The winemaker
This second Cru Classé in 1855 is located on one of the highest points of the Sauternes commune, overlooking the Ciron valley. The vineyards of Château Lamothe Guignard comprise two different terroirs, one of which, the largest, is situated on several plateaus with gravelly soils, while the other gently descends the clay-gravel slopes facing north and northwest. The grape varieties are 90% Semillon, and 10% Sauvignon and Muscadelle. The originality of Sauternes lies in its alternating sun and fog. This alternation favors the proliferation of the Botrytis cinerea fungus or noble rot. The candied grapes are picked grain by grain, with at least five passes through the vine rows during the harvest.
