The winemaker
Gregory Lovato, a young doctor of 29 years old, decided in 2005 to take over the management of Château Lajarre, which belonged to his grandparents. This allowed him to combine his two passions: medicine and oenology. He thus took on the task of continuing the wine-making tradition established in his family since the 19th century.
Gregory's paternal great-grandparents were of Italian origin, already operating a wine estate in the Veneto region in the early 19th century. His maternal great-grandparents were the owners of Clos Lassalle, at the time classified as a Saint-Emilion first growth.
In 1973, his grandfather, owner of Château Canon Montségur in AOC Castillon Côtes-de-Bordeaux, bought Château Lajarre. This wine estate was first owned by the Duke of Lorge in the 17th century and then by the Gautier family, who built the castle there during the Second Empire. When it was bought by the Lovato family in 1973, the estate was restructured, planted and replanted and is still in use today.
Today, the vineyard of Château Lajarre has a surface area of 33 hectares in a single block. The vines are planted on sandy-gravel and clay-limestone soils. Between 3500 and 4500 vines are planted per hectare and the grape varieties are 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Château Lajarre produces its wines in the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation.
