The winemaker
The history of Château Lagrange
As early as the 17th century, Château Lagrange was already producing wine of excellent quality. It was classified as the Médoc's third Grand Cru in 1855, when the estate was owned by Count Tanneguy Duchâtel. It remained so from 1842 to 1874.
Château Lagrange then fell into disuse, before being bought out in 1983 by the Suntory group, Japan's leading alcoholic beverage company. The company provided substantial capital to renovate the estate: first the vineyard, then the vat room and cellars.
Château Lagrange wines regain their former reputation. Today, the estate is managed with a concern for ecology and respectful treatment of the terroir.
The Château Lagrange vineyard
The Château Lagrange vineyard extends over two gravelly hilltops drained by the Jalle du Nord and Riou Cla streams. The majority of the Château's grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon (37%), followed by Merlot (28%) and Petit Verdot (the remaining 5%).
The red wines of Château Lagrange
Château Lagrange
Château Lagrange is a blend of 3 grape varieties. It's an excellent wine for laying down that can also be drunk young. In its youth, it is powerful and bright, before becoming more delicate and racy. Château Lagrange develops aromas of black cherry and blackcurrant, with hints of smoke and spice. Over time, notes of licorice, tobacco and cedar emerge.
Les Fiefs de Lagrange
Les Fiefs de Lagrange was created in 1983. It is made from 30-year-old vines planted on clay soil for the Merlot and fine gravel soil for the Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a powerful wine, always harmonious. Fiefs de Lagrange are dark-colored wines. Their aromas are marked by blackcurrant, black cherry and fresh plum. Their attack is suave and greedy, always with great freshness. Their tannins are opulent, often dense.
Le Haut Médoc de Lagrange
Haut Médoc de Lagrange is made with Cabernet Sauvignon aged for a year in barrels. The grapes come from 30-year-old vines located on two islets bordering the commune of Saint-Julien. Lagrange's Haut Médoc has a silky, carmine-red color. The nose is greedy, with notes of black cherry and blackcurrant. Delicious acidity on the palate.
Chateau Lagrange white wine: Arums de Lagrange
Les Arums de Lagrange was created in 1996. It is one of the very first Médoc white wines to be vinified in barrels. The wine is surprising in its explosion of tangy fruit: citrus fruits - grapefruit and lemons - share the flavors with vine peach and white peach, while a nuance of exotic fruit emerges. Arums de Lagrange expresses perfect harmony, with great freshness and delicious smoothness.
