The history of the estate
Château Laffitte-Carcasset sees its history take its roots in the early eighteenth century, the vineyard being constituted in 1759 at the place called "Le Carcasset", in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The château took the name Laffitte-Carcasset when its owner, Jean Laffitte, gave it the name in 1781.
Thereafter, the estate passed from family to family. First the Alçuet family from 1838 to 1898, then the Grillet family from 1898 to 1918. At the time of this repurchase, the field is riddled with head because of the crises of the oïdium and the phylloxera. The Vitrant family took over the estate from 1918 to 1958. The château was then classified as a Cru Bourgeois in 1932.
In 1958, the de Padirac family bought the château, and managed it until 2016, when the estate was bought by Pierre Rousseau, who now runs it under the Eden Villages company.
The terroir
In the heart of Saint-Estèphe, and surrounded by the appellation's Grands Crus Classés, Château Laffitte-Carcasset covers 35 hectares of vines nestled on the gravelly plateau of Saint-Estèphe.
These gravelly soils, typical of the different terroirs of the Médoc vineyards, are particularly clayey in this region. These soils are particularly conducive to the development of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties (60% and 35% respectively). There is also 5% of Cabernet Franc for the vegetal and floral touch of the blend.
The vines are cultivated according to the principles of sustainable agriculture. In the cellar, vinification and maturation are done in the traditional way.
The wines
The wines produced by Château Laffitte-Carcasset are typical of the Saint-Estèphe AOC: complex and fruity, they offer a beautiful tannic structure and are suitable for aging.
The Château Laffitte-Carcasset vintage has a dense, dark garnet color. It gives off a nose with a bouquet of black currant, violet, mocha, vanilla, spices and licorice. On the palate, the tannins are full-bodied, the black fruit flavors come through as well as the woody notes, but the freshness and roundness of the wine are not lost.
The Le Reflet de Laffitte Carcasset vintage offers an intense garnet color as well as an enticing nose of black fruits. On the palate, there is some structure as well as the woody notes present in the chateau's first wine. Notes of fruit are also recognizable.
