The winemaker
The Producer
The origins of the estate are very old, dating back to 1098, when the seigneury of Soussans was created by William IX, Duke of Aquitaine. Many owners succeeded one another at the head of the domain, but Pierre Mons was probably the one who first developed the vineyard. He became the owner of the Château by marriage, gave it his name and devoted himself to the development of the wine activities of the property. His descendants kept the Château la Tour de Mons until the end of the 20th century.
Since 2020, the Perrodo family is at the head of the estate. It thus joins an exceptional wine heritage since the Perrodo family already owns two neighboring grand crus: the Château Labégorce Margaux and the Château Marquis d'Alesme, both classified since 1855.
The winery
The facilities have been undergoing renovation for several years. New wineries are being built, one for winemaking and the other for storage. The estate also benefits from a drainage program and reasoned viticulture methods are adopted to preserve the quality of this exceptional environment. The 58 hectares in a single block that make up the vineyard are spread over a soil of Garonne gravel and clay-limestone gravel. The majority of the vines are Merlot (61%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (33%). The rest is equally divided between Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc (3% each).
The skills
Chateau La Tour de Mons is committed to traditional practices, but also uses innovative, state-of-the-art facilities.
Thus, the grapes are harvested mainly by hand and the vinification is conducted in parcels in modern thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. The vintages are then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
The wines
Chateau La Tour de Mons is a classic Margaux, a wine that is both pure and elegant, expressing all the typicity of the exceptional Margaux terroir. It is a racy and greedy wine with a deep red color and fruity, spicy and woody aromas. It offers a beautiful density and fine tannins. Its potential is revealed with a few years of aging. The 2020 vintage is made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The nose is on the fruit, with peppery notes.
Marquis de Mons is a cuvée from a rigorous plot selection. The château's second wine is elegant, balanced and supple. It expresses all the beauty of this terroir with a complex aromatic palette, combining black fruits and woody aromas. Its structure is dense with delicate tannins.
