The winemaker
The history of Château La Pointe
Château La Pointe was mentioned in a very famous Bordeaux wine guide, "Cocks & Féret", as early as 1868. Its wines are mentioned as high quality premiers crus. In 1882, Château La Pointe's wines were awarded a silver medal at the Bordeaux Exhibition, as well as at the Universal Exhibition in Amsterdam in 1883. The château is inspired by Directoire architecture. It was one of the first Pomerol estates to be granted the right to bear the name "Château".
Since 2007, Château La Pointe has been managed by Éric Monneret. As soon as he arrived, he undertook extensive work to restore the château's reputation, which had been somewhat neglected. In particular, drainage work improved the quality of the vines. The new manager also introduced rigorous plot management to optimize the diversity of the soils and reveal the finesse of the right bank grape varieties. The vat room was also renovated to optimize vinification.
The Château La Pointe vineyard
The Château La Pointe vineyard is located in the Pomerol terroir. This appellation represents a total of 813 hectares, less than 1% of Bordeaux's total vineyard area. The estate covers 23 hectares of vines in a single block. The name "La Pointe" comes from the particular geometry of the vineyard, which represents a triangular shape with a large point. The appellation's signature grape variety is Merlot. It is complemented by Cabernet Franc. Château La Pointe produces 120,000 bottles of wine a year, making it one of Pomerol's top five estates.
The wines of Château La Pointe
Château La Pointe offers two red wines.
- Château La Pointe
Château La Pointe is the estate's first wine. Its blend is composed of 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc. Its crimson color is intense and brilliant. The wine is very fruity, dominated by blackberry and bigarreau cherry. Its tannins are smooth, elegant and racy.
- Ballade de La Pointe
Ballade de la Pointe is a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc. This second wine of the domaine has an intense, brilliant deep purple-red color. The nose exudes a wide range of berries, including blackberry and Morello cherry. Floral notes include violets and wallflowers. The finish is reminiscent of licorice. Ballade de La Pointe is a suave, refined wine with a lovely sweetness.
