The winemaker
The history of the winery
The estate has very ancient origins. It owes its name to the Mission congregation, which was founded in the 17th century. The first vines planted on this estate date back to the Middle Ages. They were then bequeathed to the congregation, which took care of the vineyard and produced a wine of excellence, one of the appellation's finest crus.
Mission wines gained international renown in the 19th century, under the impetus of the estate's next owners, the Chiapella family. In 1862, they won their first gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in London. Successive owners have continued this work of viticultural excellence and further developed the reputation of this Grand Cru.
Château la Mission Haut Brion has now joined the Clarence Dillon estate and has benefited from major investments that have enabled extensive renovations and the construction of modern state-of-the-art facilities.
The vineyard
The vineyard is planted with three red grape varieties (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) and two white grape varieties (one-third Sauvignon and two-thirds Semillon).
The vines are planted on the large gravel terrace of Haut-Brion, situated between two streams, the Peugue and the Serpent. The soil is sandy-clay with one of the gravels made up of a wide variety of quartz.
The wines
Chateau La Mission Haut Brion is the estate's first wine, available in red and white.
The white, 2020 vintage is a racy, elegant wine with an intense aromatic bouquet of orange blossom, lemon zest, grapefruit and floral notes. Made from a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it has won numerous awards.
Chateau La Mission Haut Brion red vintage 2012 is a wine made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It has a 5-star rating in the 2016 Bettane guide. It's a fine, elegant wine with an original bouquet and a beautiful deep purple color.
La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion is the estate's second wine, this is a complex, fragrant Bordeaux with a beautiful aromatic expression, very fresh. The nose is fruity and the palate crisp, with a juicy attack.
