The winemaker
The history of Château la Gaffelière
Between the 11th and 15th centuries, the site of Château la Gaffelière was reserved for a leper colony. Sick people who went out begging on the roads leaned on their sticks, also known as gaffs. This is why lepers were called gaffets, which explains the name of the future château.
The current owner is Léo de Malet Roquefort. He is heir to one of the oldest families in the Saint Emilion region. Guillaume Malet can be traced back to the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066. He was the first to be knighted.
In 1654, Louis Malet de la Jorie married Marguerite de Calvimont, who inherited the feudal Château de Roquefort on her father's death. This date marks the birth of the Malet Roquefort branch. Château la Gaffelière has remained in the family ever since. Léo de Malet Roquefort knew his inheritance was secure, thanks to his children: Stanislas, Anastasia, Bérangère, Guillaume and Alexandre.
The Château la Gaffelière vineyard
The Château la Gaffelière vineyard covers 38 hectares, 22 of which are Premier Grand Cru Classé. Its parcels are classified into three distinct zones.
1 - The asteriated limestone plateau is made up of 3 to 5-meter layers of clay and green marl sandwiched between two layers of limestone. The plots are located at an altitude of 90 meters.
2 - The south to southwest-facing slope is ideal for vines, with optimal exposure. Natural water drainage, combined with outcrops of Fronsadais clay molasses in the subsoil, regulate the water and mineral supply to the vines.
3 - The foot of the slope is made up of deep sands carbonated by colluvium. This part of the terroir produces Château la Gaffelière's finest, most delicate grapes.
In the 2000s, the vineyard was completely restructured. It is planted with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 35 years. Viticulture is integrated, with as little artificial intervention as possible. The soil is worked mechanically, and the rows between the vines are naturally grassed. The grapes are harvested by hand.

Le Clos de la Gaffelière
Le Clos de la Gaffelière is a Premier Grand Cru Classé, belonging to the Saint Émilion AOC. It is a great wine, elegant, harmonious and very pure. It is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Remarkably well-built, this is a powerful, easy-drinking wine. The nose is rich in fruit, notably blackberries and blueberries.
Its Cabernet Franc content gives it extraordinary vivacity. The palate is complex, with a powerful structure that brings out the red fruits. The tannins are fine and elegant.
