The winemaker
History
We have to go back to the seventeenth century to hope to find traces of its history, even if it's likely to be older. Initially, the Château was sold to a family named Dominique Glenne, who later renamed the property "Dominique".
Several changes of ownership took place between the 17th and 19th centuries, but this didn't prevent the estate from appearing on Pierre de Belleyme's map of Guyenne in 1785, or from being cited with praise in a book on Bordeaux wines in 1868.
It was also during the 19th century that the famous legend of the estate was born. After acquiring the estate, Henri Greloud, a wine merchant, set in motion the story of a merchant who fell in love with the Caribbean island of Dominica and renamed the Château "La Dominique". At the time, the estate covered 21 hectares.
In 1955, it reached the Saint-Emilion classification as a Grand Cru Classé. In 1969, Clément Fayat (a Libourne-based building and civil engineering contractor) fell under the property's spell, bought it and then carried out major works to improve the winery and equipment. 10 years later, a renowned oenologist by the name of Michel Rolland came to advise the team.
Since 2012, further renovations have been undertaken by architect Jean Nouvel, doubling vinification capacity and confirming Château La Dominique's place among the great...
Fabulous terroir
A prestigious estate in the Saint-Emilion appellation, Château La Dominique boasts around 30 hectares of vines. Benefiting from sandy and clayey soils giving unique characteristics to the grapes grown, the estate produces wines considered to be gems. Indeed, specialists such as Henri Enjalbert have declared that the estate's terroir can easily be compared to those of the region's greatest.
Grape varieties such as Merlot (81% of the vineyard), Cabernet-Franc (16%) and Cabernet-Sauvignon (3%) are grown using integrated farming methods, with a density per hectare of around 8,000 vines. As with any wine, the care given to the vines is paramount, as well as to their arrival in the winery.
A cellar that has undergone immense changes to stay one step ahead. Numerous innovations and thermo-regulated vats enable us to achieve perfection through parcel-by-parcel vinification, thus revealing all the secrets of this fabulous terroir.
This precision is the basis of all Château La Dominique vintages to remain one of the appellation's great growths. With its round, fruity wines that improve with age, the estate now enjoys a growing reputation and international renown.
