The winemaker
Jean-Sébastien, the estate's winemaker, tells us a little about his Château l'Évêché wines:
How would you define the wines of Château l'Évêché in three words?
I try to work on three aspects of my wine. I like to make wines for pleasure. Then I like my wines to be elegant, I like balance. The last axis is authenticity, staying true to what we do and not betraying the terroir.
What is your fondest memory of winemaking at Château l'Évêché?
Harvesting the Petit Verdot with my daughters. I planted the vines in 2010 and the first harvest took place in 2014. It was at the beginning of November, with my two daughters Rose and Louise, who were 9 and 12 years old. The three of us picked the grapes from 600 vines, almost in winter, with our buckets and secateurs. It's an incredible memory of family sharing.
Who do you make your wine for?
For my friends. If I do something that pleases them, it pleases me tenfold. And I tell myself that if it pleases them, chances are it will please strangers, who are the vast majority of my consumers. There's a kind of ingratitude in wine, in the sense that you put a lot of yourself into it, and then very quickly it's a job that no longer belongs to you.
