3.9
(24 customer reviews)
Château Kirwan is located in the south of the Margaux appellation. It has been so named since 1755. In 1950, the quality of the Château was revealed when the vineyard was restructured and bottling began on the estate. At Château Kirwan, the vines are cultivated with great care and attention to detail, and the men are at their service. All harvests are carried out by hand, with the aim of producing exceptional Bordeaux wines. Find out more

The winemaker

The history of Kirwan Castle

Château Kirwan's origins go back to the 18th century, with the 1760 union of an Irish merchant, Mark Kirwan, and the daughter of Sir John Collingwood (one of Bordeaux's leading merchants). In 1855, the château was classified as one of the Médoc's 3rd growths and Bordeaux's 16th great wine. On this occasion, the château changed ownership to the Godard family.

The modern history of Château Kirwan began in 1925 when the Schÿler family acquired the estate. The family had been established for four generations in Bordeaux as merchants under the name "Schröder & Schÿler". Familiar with Bordeaux wines, the family's winegrowing history is rooted, from generation to generation, in the desire to make the estate even better known.

Between 1955 and 1967, Jean-Henri Schÿler set about restructuring the vineyard by improving the land, redesigning the drainage system and replanting wherever necessary. The creation of the Margaux AOC in 1954 further breathed new life into the château.

Today, the 8th generation of the family is at the helm of the château, continuing the family legacy, but also anchoring the estate in modernity with the installation of a new winery in 2017.

Savoir-faire and terroir

Where there's a legacy, there's a know-how. This know-how is rooted first in the vineyard and the work of the soil, then in the cellar, and finally in the ageing of the wines.

The Château Kirwan vineyard is located on the heights of the Cantenac plateau, right in the Margaux AOC. The soils are a mixture of gravel and clay, underpinning 37 hectares of vines.

These 35 parcels are planted with Merlot on the laminite clay to the west of the estate, and Cabernet Sauvignon on the gravel closer to the château. As a result, the estate's great wines feature the fleshy, well-balanced roundness of Merlot and the velvety tannins and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The estate's wines

Château Kirwan wines are expressive and complex, crafted mainly from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are also in the minority), expressing the full terroir of Bordeaux's left bank.

Cuvée Château Kirwan is aged in oak barrels for 18 months, with half the barrels renewed each year. A Grand Cru Classé, its nose is powerful and elegant, with bright fruit. Its tannins are noble and mellow, with crisp red and black fruit on the palate. The substance is present, close to velvet and with woody notes.

Cuvée Les Charmes de Kirwan, the château's second wine, offers a more floral and spicy nose. However, it retains its fruitiness and finesse. Its color is dark, almost black. On the palate, it offers silky smoothness and volume. Fruity and woody, this wine offers a lovely, long, supple tannic structure with a spicy finish.
