The winemaker
The domain
The estate dates back to the 16th century, having been the home of seigneurial judges, and it wasn't until 1994 that the vines were planted. Acquired in 2016 by David Gutmann and his three sons, the vineyard covers just over eight hectares of clay-gravel and sandy-gravel soils. It's a terroir that's both poor and cool, conditions that favor a long ripening cycle for the vines and their deep rooting.
Two hectares are devoted to white and 6.7 to red. It is managed by one of the brothers, Benjamin Gutmann. The estate's winemaker remained with the team during the change of ownership, bringing his technical know-how and in-depth knowledge of the estate and its terroir.
Château Jouvente cuvées can be found on the tables of gourmet restaurants and Michelin-starred chefs in France, Belgium and Luxembourg. In addition, the estate is now a venue for artistic and cultural gatherings, offering concerts, painting and photo exhibitions, fashion shows and poetry.
The choice of sustainable viticulture
The practices implemented at Château Jouvente are thought out with respect for terroir and people, and aim to produce wines of the highest quality.
Care of the vines begins at the end of winter, with regular visits to the rows throughout the year to prune, aerate the soil, remove suckers, prune and thin out the leaves. This work is carried out before the harvest, and plays an important role not only in obtaining balanced, healthy bunches of grapes, but also in ensuring that the vines put down deep roots.
Yields are deliberately controlled and harvesting is carried out by hand at full ripeness to promote good sugar concentration. The estate follows a bio-control program to reinforce vine resistance and limit human intervention as much as possible. No pesticides are used, and organic alternatives are favored with the use of orange peel, for example, rather than copper. The estate has been awarded HVE level 3 certification, the highest, in 2019. This certification validates the positive impact of the practices implemented on resource management and biodiversity.
The wines
White wine production is 8000 to 9000 bottles per year. The whites produced on the estate are characterized by their aromatic richness, with notes of exotic fruit, citrus and coconut. These are exceptional wines, recognized by the trade. For example, the Château Jouvente Blanc millésime 2015 was awarded the gold medal at the Concours Général de Paris.
Red wines make up the bulk of production, they share elegance, character and a fine tannic structure, with melted tannins. Three main ranges are offered:
- Barrel-aged wines: the Château Jouvente cuvée.
- Vat-aged wines: La Fontaine de Jouvente and La Source de Château Jouvente.
- The so-called new generation cuvées, benefiting from full vinification are three in number: Solal, Elias and Noam. They each correspond to a vintage and have been named in honor of the owner's grandchildren.
