(11 customer reviews)
This estate, located 24km east of Saint-Émilion, has only known 4 owner families in its lifetime. Today, their two daughters, Valentine and Charlotte, are carrying on their parents' passion by taking over the reins of the Hostens-Picant estate. The winemaker
Château Hostens-Picant wines are served by top French chefs, in the finest restaurants and on the finest tables in France. They are also exported to over 12 countries worldwide.
Located in Les Lèves-et-Thoumeyragues, 25 km east of Saint-Emilion, the 42-hectare vineyard produces fine Bordeaux wines, using sustainable viticultural practices that respect this exceptional terroir.
The history of the winery
The origins of the estate date back to the 15th century, but despite its age, it has only known 4 families of owners. Long known as "Domaine de la Grangeneuve", it produced quality wines for several centuries.
The estate then fell into disuse, until its purchase by the Hostens-Picant family in 1986. The new owners decided to revive this Bordeaux terroir forgotten by wine professionals and enthusiasts alike. In the early years, they devoted themselves to winemaking trials to determine the best ways to express the full richness and potential of this terroir. In 1990, they built a winery and relaunched the Sainte-Foy Bordeaux appellation. The Château's first vintage was produced that same year.
For the past 35 years, the couple have been committed to producing quality wines, and now work with their daughters Valentine and Charlotte with the same objective in mind. Their aim now is to produce wines that offer the best value for money, so that as many people as possible can discover this terroir and gain the recognition it deserves. Wine distribution is handled directly by the Château, rather than by a négociant as is traditionally the case in the Bordeaux region.
Committed and responsible viticulture
The terroir of Château Hostens-Picant is rich in limestone and clay, producing intense, powerful wines. There are also areas of flint on the estate, giving the wines their minerality.
The estate is committed to an environmentally-friendly approach and began a transition to organic farming in 2018 with the conversion of four hectares of vines initially, then ten. The entire vineyard will gradually be converted over the coming years.
The wines
Château Hostens-Picant vintage 2008 is a silky red wine offering a rich aromatic bouquet with aromas of vanilla, forest fruits and hints of violets. The tannins are well-coated and the finish is fresh with spicy notes. Perfect with grilled duck breast.
La cuvée des Demoiselles millésime 2017 is made from a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon, with a hint of Muscadelle. This is Château Hostens-Picant's emblematic white wine, made from a parcel-by-parcel selection of the vineyard's finest terroirs. It is often cited as one of Bordeaux's finest white wines. It has great structure and excellent ageing potential.
La cuvée d'exception Lucullus is a gastronomic wine created in 1998 by Yves Hostens-¨Picant. Made only from the best vintages, the cuvée is the result of a rigorous plot selection. The selected terroir is located on the plateau, with limestone soil and low yields. The grapes are processed entirely by hand, and the wine is made in wooden casks. The cuvée is aged in barrels for 15 months.
