Château Haut-Bailly
(9 customer reviews)
Château Haut-Bailly is located on one of the highest ridges on the left bank of the Garonne. The 30-hectare vineyard is planted exclusively with red grape varieties. The foundations of Haut-Bailly are composed of a sandy soil mixed with slippery tertiary gravel. The subsoil is one of the Château's most distinctive features: faluns or petrified fossil stone. It can also be seen on the cellar walls. Thanks to this soil, the vines derive minerals and micronutrients that ensure rich aromas. Find out more

The winemaker
Following in the footsteps of Château Haut-Bailly
Traces of vine cultivation at Château Haut-Bailly date back to the 15th century. But it was in 1630 that Firmin Le Bailly, a Parisian banker, became the owner and gave the estate its name. At the end of the 19th century, Alcide Bellot des Minières was one of the most notable owners. This engineer, who was nicknamed the "King of Winegrowers", brought Haut-Bailly wines to a high level, very close to the premier crus.
It was also this successful entrepreneur who built the Château we all know today. The early 20th century was chaotic, due to the wrong choices made in the fight against phylloxera. But also due to the many changes of ownership.
In 1955, Daniel Sanders bought the estate and gave it a new lease of life. His son succeeded him brilliantly, producing some twenty top-class vintages. Then came Robert Wilmers, an American banker who bought the estate in 1998. He retained Jean Sanders and his granddaughter Véronique to manage the vineyard.
A timeless vineyard
The Château Haut-Bailly vineyard covers 30 hectares on gravel, sand and clay soils. A wide selection of grape varieties are planted here:
60% Cabernet Sauvignon
34% Merlot
3% Petit Verdot
3% Cabernet Franc
Haut-Bailly owes its reputation and its quality wines to this great diversity and variety of soils. Château Haut-Bailly hides a little treasure, and not the least: 4 hectares of vines over a century old, planted with 6 grape varieties by Alcide Bellot des Minières.
The Château's wines
Yields are kept below the authorized limit, at around 45 hectoliters per hectare. This means that annual production is around 160,000 bottles for Château Haut-Bailly and La Parde de Haut-Bailly wines. The Château was one of the first estates to produce a second wine. "Domaine de la Parde" was the first to appear in 1967, and was taken over in 1979 as "La Prade de Haut-Bailly". Since 1987, it has produced a third wine under the name "Pessac-Léognan" in certain years.
The winemaking operations are carried out all year round by hand by passionate craftsmen endowed with great expertise. To further enhance the quality of its wines, Château Haut-Bailly is committed to visionary initiatives. For example, the molecular research behind the aroma associated with aging wines.
