History of the Chateau Guiraud estate
Previously known as Château de Bayle, the property took the name Château Guiraud when it was bought by the Guiraud family in 1766. It then changed ownership several times, before being bought in 2006 by a holding company.
Today, Château Guiraud takes advantage of its location on the Bordeaux Wine Route to offer a wine tourism trail, with a biodiversity garden in the middle of the vineyards. Visitors stroll through the grounds where aromatic plants, more than 200 varieties of fruits and vegetables, as well as a hundred varieties of plants and flowers grow. To finish the tour in beauty, tourists enjoy the restaurant "La Chapelle". This exceptional welcome has earned the Château Guiraud estate an international wine tourism trophy.
The terroir of Château Guiraud
The vineyard of Château Guiraud is located in the commune of Sauternes, 45 kilometers south of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Garonne River. The soil is essentially composed of sandy gravel which represents 80% of it. The remaining 20% is deeper clayey gravel soil.
The estate overlooks springs that ensure the drainage of the land, preventing any stagnation of moisture. Hedges have been planted to shelter birds and insects that protect the vines and avoid the use of chemicals.
The vineyard is composed of 35% Sauvignon Blanc. It participates in the blend that earned Château Guiraud the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Sauternes. The vines are selected with the greatest care from the oldest stocks in the property's conservatory, before being replanted separately. The rest of the vineyard is made of Semillon.
The wines of Château Guiraud
Chateau Guiraud Premier Grand Cru Classé en 1855 Sauternes
The Premier Grand Cru Sauternes is aged for about 18 months. It usually benefits from new barrels which allow it to express its natural elegance. Château Guiraud Sauternes is a full-bodied wine that never ceases to delight the taste buds. Its nose is precise and particularly sensual. The wine is unctuous, with a touch of mineral flavors that contribute to its originality. The wine has a great aromatic purity that it always expresses with great finesse.
Petit Guiraud, the other Sauternes
Petit Guiraud is the second Sauternes from the Château Guiraud estate. Made from a blend of several lots chosen for their style, it is aged in stainless steel tanks or in barrels. The Petit Guiraud stands out for its freshness that lingers for a long time on the palate.
G de Château Guiraud, Blanc sec Bordeaux
Chateau Guiraud also produces a dry white, made from grapes harvested at maturity. It is aged in the same barrels that were used to mature Petit Guiraud, for about 7 months. Its blend is balanced with the same proportion of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The G of Château Guiraud is renowned for its personality and its rich fruity taste.
