The winemaker
The history of Château Gruaud-Larose
Château Gruaud-Larose was founded in 1725 by Abbé Joseph Stanislas Gruaud. It has since had several owners, but only four families have succeeded each other. After the Gruaud-Larose family came the Balguerie family, then the et Sarget family, the Cordier family and finally the Merlaut family. This attachment to family, heritage and inheritance is also passed on among the château's staff, with many employees working there from father to son and mother to daughter.
The Château Gruaud-Larose terroir
The Château Gruaud-Larose vineyard covers 82 hectares, dedicated solely to red wine. The grape varieties are 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 45 years, and the estate produces an average of 350,000 bottles a year. The terroir consists of clay, sand and pebbles left behind by the river.
The subsoil is composed of red, yellow or blue clay resting on sand and rolled pebbles inherited from the Pyrenean diluvium. The vines benefit from the Médoc's microclimate, which is particularly conducive to vine growth. The hot, dry summer allowed the fruit to begin to take on color, ending the veraison with perfect ripeness before the harvest. Abundant rainfall for the rest of the year is perfect for the vines.
The vineyards of Château Gruaud-Larose are farmed using sustainable methods for soil cultivation and organic fertilization. Harvesting is carried out by hand, and the grapes are sorted on conveyor belts in the vineyard and double-sorted when they are received. The vineyard is managed using agronomic methods that respect the environment, with the planting of hedges, grass cover and sheep grazing.
The wines of Château Gruaud-Larose
Château Gruaud-Larose Deuxième Grand Cru Classé
Château Gruaud-Larose Deuxième Grand Cru Classé is so dark in color you'd think it was black. The nose is powerful, imbued with red fruits. The palate is fat, full and rich. The tannins are quite present, but their finesse makes them very enjoyable. This is a wine for laying down, even long laying down, which softens with age.
Sarget Gruaud-Larose
Composed of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, Sarget Gruaud-Larose red wine is a fine, generous and perfectly balanced Saint Julien. This second wine from Château Gruaud-Larose can be enjoyed younger than its elder sibling, as it reaches maturity earlier. It is nonetheless a wine for laying down. Powerful and full-bodied, it is rather fat and rich in fruit.
