The winemaker
The history of the estate
The history of Château Grand-Puy Ducasse began in the mid-17th century, when Arnaud Ducasse bought a small house on the banks of the Pauillac river. One of his descendants, Pierre Ducasse, was to make the estate a part of winegrowing history. He bought several plots to expand the vineyard until his death in 1797.
His son took over the 60-hectare estate, nearly two-thirds of which was planted with vines. In 1820, he built the present château facing the Gironde River. In 1855, on the occasion of the imperial classification of Left Bank wines, the château was classified as the fifth Grand Cru, under the name Artigues Arnaud. The château was renamed Grand-Puy Ducasse in 1932.
In 1971, the château was revitalized and restructured following its purchase by new partners. The winery was modernized and vineyard treatment optimized. In 2004, the château was acquired by CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Crédit Agricole Group.
The terroir
Located in the Pauillac AOC terroir, the Château Grand-Puy Ducasse estate extends over 40 hectares of vines, spread over 3 large parcels . The property is bordered to the north by Mouton, Lafite and Pontet-Canet. In the center, the vines occupy part of Bourdieu de Grand Puy, and the Saint-Lambert plateau to the south.
The vineyards are planted on gravelly, sicilo-gravelly Garonne soils, typical of the Pauillac appellation terroir. With an average age of 25 years, the vines are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (62%) to bring complexity, structure and power to the wine, and Merlot (38%) to give suppleness and roundness to the blends.
The wines
Cuvée Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is an elegant, structured wine with a complex bouquet. Typical of the Pauillac appellation, it is aged in new barrels to develop silky tannins and woody notes. A wine for laying down, it is advisable to wait between 5 and 8 years to appreciate all its qualities.
The Prélude à Grand-Puy Ducasse cuvée is made from younger vines and with shorter ageing periods than the first wine (which requires 12 to 16 months). Nevertheless, it too presents empyreumatic and woody notes, accompanied by a bouquet of red and black fruits. A fine balance between structure and roundness.
