The winemaker
The producer
Château Grand Pontet produces exceptional Saint-Émilions thanks to modern facilities consisting of a recent winery equipped with temperature-controlled vats. Cuvées are aged mainly in new oak. Long owned by a trading company, the estate was bought by a family of winegrowers in 1980 and managed by Sylvie Pourquet-Bécot from 2000 to 2021. Château Grand Pontet is now owned by the Clarence Dillon estate, which groups together all the Prince of Luxembourg's winegrowing properties. Its vineyards have been combined with those of Château Quintus, making it one of the largest estates in the Saint-Émilion appellation.
The winery
The vineyard extends over 14 hectares right next to the bell tower of the village of Saint-Émilion. Its neighbors are three of the appellation's Premiers Grands Crus. The grape varieties are Merlot (the majority), Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 35 years. The vineyard is planted on the appellation's classic limestone soils, as well as on clayey and clay-limestone soils. The entire estate is managed using methods that respect this exceptional terroir. Yields are controlled to ensure quality production.
The wines
Château Grand Pontet is a cuvée blended from the three grape varieties grown on the estate. A powerful red wine, it reveals all its qualities and aromatic concentration after a few years' cellaring. The estate's second wine is Dauphin de Grand Pontet, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It's a dry red wine with good acidity, balanced tannins and woody notes.
