The winemaker

A passion that has lasted for over two centuries

Although it has passed through several hands over the years, the Château Grand Ormeau wine estate enjoys an excellent reputation in the region. For over two centuries, passionate winegrowers have managed this estate with a master's hand, producing Grand Ormeau wine officially recognized as a "Crus bourgeois et 1er artisans" from 1874 onwards. The history of this wine estate dates back to the early 20th century, when the Camplan heirs took over its management. Why did they choose this particular vineyard? Quite simply because the Château Grand Ormeau appellation was already one of the best.

In 1988, Jean-Claude Beton took over the estate. This well-known man is none other than the inventor of Orangina. In taking over the estate, Jean-Claude Beton committed himself to restoring it to its former glory and continuing to produce high-quality wine. To this end, he has surrounded himself with famous people such as Michel Rolland, a renowned oenologist in the field. Since 2017, a new team has been at the helm of the estate, tirelessly continuing the work that has been done to date.

A 14-hectare vineyard

The vineyards of the Château Grand Ormeau estate cover 14 hectares. Oriented north-south, the vineyard lies in the upper part of the Lalande de Pomerol appellation. The terroir of this vineyard is relatively rich. The soils are composed of clay, iron dross, old sand and gravel.

Two cuvées resulting from rigorous selection processes

Château Grand Ormeau offers two different cuvées. The main cuvée is "Château Grand Ormeau". This wine is composed of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. This cuvée is harvested by hand from vines over 20 years old on approximately 9 hectares of the estate. Vinification takes 3 weeks, in temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats. Ageing lasts between 13 and 16 months, in French oak barrels. The wine is then filtered before bottling.

The secondary cuvée is called "Château Grand Ormeau - cuvée Chevalier". The vines used for this cuvée occupy 3 hectares of the wine estate. This wine is produced from relatively young vines, and the vinification process is the same as for the main cuvée. For both cuvées, the selection process is extremely rigorous.
