The winemaker
It took on its present name in the 19th century, and was also named Château Grand Corbin Pécresse for a time. Its current surface area is the result of the 2010 merger between Château du Haut Corbin and Château Grand Corbin.
The Corbin vineyard passed through the hands of a number of owners, all of whom contributed to building its reputation. Guillaume Bouchereau was one of the most decisive figures in the history of Château du Grand Corbin, bringing his entrepreneurial know-how to the cane business, with a focus on rigorous vineyard care, winemaker training and the vineyard's overall development strategy. A true visionary, he managed his estate using methods that were highly modern for the time, producing wines of the highest quality. He had to leave his land during the French Revolution, and the estate was divided, one of them becoming Château Grand Corbin.
The château obtained its classification as a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru in 1855, but lost it in 1996, before regaining it in 2006. The 2012 classification confirms its status as an exceptional Cru. The vineyard's main grape variety is Merlot, complemented by two Cabernets, and the vines flourish on a silica terroir and ferric clay subsoil.
The estate produces one of the finest cuvées in the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, Château Grand Corbin red. The 2016 vintage is one of the Château's great successes. The wine is full-bodied, with a very fruity aromatic palette of red fruits, blueberries and blackberries. Round and fresh on the palate, with creamy tannins and a long finish. It will reveal its full potential after a few years' cellaring.
