The history of Château Giscours

The birth of the estate is said to date back to the 14th century, but it was only recognized in 1552 by the deed of sale. The estate we know today was created by Marc Promis. He particularly enlarged the estate (nearly 200 hectares, including 50 hectares of vines) and built the present-day château, which comprises the imposing residence, several stables, wine presses, cellars and vats (the latter removed in 1835).

In 1847, the great Parisian banker Jean-Pierre Pescatir bought the estate and radically altered it, renovating the château and farm buildings. From 1875 onwards, new owner Edouard Cruse entrusted the estate's gardens to landscape gardener Eugène Bülher and commissioned architects Duphot to build a model farmhouse called "Ferme Suzanne" in honor of his wife Suzanne Baour.

The 1855 Grands Crus classification established Giscours' reputation. A succession of owners followed, until Nicolas Tari bought the estate in 1953. He modernized and expanded the estate. His son Pierre succeeded him in 1970 and continued the modernization effort.

The vineyard

The vineyard is in production on 92 hectares, on four types of coarse and medium gravel spread over four distinct hills. The estate's current grape varieties are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, supplemented by 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Vine density is very high, ranging from 8,300 to 10,000 vines per hectare, with an average age of average age of 40 years for more than a quarter of them.

The Margalais vineyards stretch some twenty-five kilometers north of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde. In the center of the appellation, a six-by-two-kilometer plateau of white gravel produces the majority of the Grands Crus classés. On the outskirts of the property, gravelly hilltops separated by drainage ditches are islands of vines. The grape varieties authorized for the appellation are Cabernet franc N, Cabernet sauvignon N, Merlot N, Carménère, Côt N and Petit verdot N.

Chateau Giscours pairings

This is a wine that goes perfectly with red meats. The delicacy of Margaux accompanies game meats such as duck or partridge, and the inevitable local recipe: Entrecôte à la bordelaise. It also goes very well with fish, such as grilled or semi-cooked tuna steak. As for cheeses, it goes wonderfully well with Brie de Meaux or Saint Nectaire.
