The winemaker
The history of Château Fombrauge
The first mention of Fons Brogiera - the spring surrounded by heather - dates back to 1466, when squire Jacques de Canolle proclaimed himself seigneur de Fombrauge after acquiring the property.
This cultivated and inquisitive character was ennobled by his position as Treasurer of France. He became an important local figure and was made a bourgeois of the City of Bordeaux. As soon as he became the owner of Château Fombrauge, he set about bringing the land to fruition by planting the first vines. The history of Château Fombrauge was then linked to the Dumas family, then the Taffard family, and finally Bernard Magrez, who acquired it in 1999. He then continued production of the sublime Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé on the vineyard, which covers almost 60 hectares.
Bernard Magrez's career
Today, Bernard Magrez is known as the man with 40 châteaux! He's the epitome of the self-taught man who started from nothing, and succeeded thanks to his unwavering passion and hard work. Born in 1936, Bernard Magrez began his career with an apprenticeship as a wood sawyer. He then joined the Cordier group, a major Bordeaux wine house, where he learned all the ins and outs of the business.
In 1964, he set up his own company. Success came quickly, with such successes as Malesan, a Bordeaux wine that became the leader in France. In 1983, he acquired his first vineyard, Château Pape Clément. He continues to expand over the years, and today owns 43 vineyards in 9 countries.
Château Fombrauge wines
Château Fombrauge wines are the result of a drastic plot-by-plot selection based on grape variety and vine age. Harvesting is carried out by hand, in small crates, after precise spotting by drone. After de-stemming, which requires around twenty skilled workers, the grapes are sorted on tables. The vats used are made of wood, stainless steel and concrete. Their capacity does not exceed 70 hectoliters.

Château Fombrauge - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Rouge is dark, limpid and intense. The nose is both floral and fruity, with hints of red fruit. This is a fragrant wine, with a soft texture and an ascending finish. A perfect accompaniment to duck breast in sauce.
