The winemaker

Château Figeac, a name that dates back to the 2nd century

It was the Figeacus family who gave their name to the château in the 2nd century. At the time, it was a Gallo-Roman villa. The commune of Figeac in the Lot also owes its name to this eminent family.
The villa became a seigneury in the Middle Ages, as the remains of its dovecote attest. Visitors will also notice the few low, narrow doors and windows, reminiscent of the 11th century. Château Figeac was burnt down during the Wars of Religion, and restored in the classical Renaissance style. The winery built at that time is still in use today.

The Manoncourt family, who now own Château Figeac, acquired it in 1892. The vineyard was restructured and the vat room fitted with oak vats. The label bearing the coat of arms of Henri de Chèvremont made its first appearance in 1907.
In 1955, Château Figeac became Premier Grand Cru Classé.

The terroir of Château Figeac

Located west of Saint Émilion, on the edge of Pomerol, Château Figeac's vineyards are planted with 30% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate is the largest in Saint Émilion, with 40 hectares of vines and 14 hectares of meadows, ponds and woods surrounding the château. It is characterized by its 3 gravelly hilltops, which allow for natural drainage and runoff.

The soils are composed of sandy gravel alluvium from the Massif Central, deposited by rivers in the early Quaternary period. The gravelly, hilly topography is conducive to the accumulation and reflection of heat. The resulting microclimate favors grape ripeness, as well as wine complexity and finesse.

The Château Figeac wine

Château Figeac is the flagship wine of the estate. Its blend comprises 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot. This predominance of Cabernet allows it to express all the elegance of the great Bordeaux wines.

The three croups of Günzian gravel make Château Figeac complex, with a strong character. The nose is rich and expresses a wide range of aromas. When the wine is young, the palate is dominated by floral Cabernet Sauvignon. With age, the wine becomes more structured and complex. Roundness and body come from the Merlot, while the Cabernet Franc refines the tannins.
With age, aromas of undergrowth, licorice and leather gradually emerge. The attack of Château Figeac is frank, the substance silky, the complexity elegant.
Château Figeac can be drunk young, but is an exceptional wine for laying down. Some anthology vintages prove it.
