The winemaker
A winery with ancient origins
The vineyard already existed in the Middle Ages, and the château produced wines that were served on the finest tables of the time. The estate belonged to the Seigneurs de Lansac, noblemen with close ties to the English court, and the estate's vintages were much appreciated by the English kings. Today's residence was built in the 17th century by the Sires de Riveaux. The estate subsequently changed ownership several times. In the 18th century, it took on its present name when Gaillard de Falfas purchased and restored the building.
The producer
Château Falfas is now owned by a winemaking couple, Véronique and John Cochran. Committed to producing generous wines expressing all the beauty of this exceptional terroir, they have been applying biodynamic principles to their property for almost 35 years, with yields deliberately controlled and each bunch selected with the utmost rigor. The vineyards are planted on clay-limestone soil typical of the Médoc, and feature the region's classic grape varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, complemented by a more atypical Médoc variety, Malbec. The vines are 35 years old on average.
The wines
Château Falfas is the estate's first wine. It's a characterful red with a ruby color, revealing aromas of black fruits mixed with spices on tasting. Round on the palate, with structure and fine tannins. Les demoiselles is a generous cuvée with plenty of roundness and crispness. It offers a lovely fruity bouquet, with notes of baked earth.
