The winemaker

Based in Saint Julien (Médoc, Bordeaux region), Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, classified 2nd Grand Cru in 1855, is one of the great symbols of the Médoc vineyards. Let's take a closer look at this prestigious estate.

A rich history

A succession of families and stories has made the Château famous. It all began in 1720 with the Bergeron family and above all Jacques de Bergeron, initiator of massive exports to Scandinavian countries. Between 1797 and 1866, Bertrand Ducru and his family invested heavily in the winery and vineyards, giving the Château the name it enjoys today. When Bertrand Ducru's daughter, Marie-Louise Ravet, bought the estate in 1860, the quality of the wine improved rapidly and lastingly. Between 1866 and 1941, the Johnston and Desbarats families also helped to consolidate the estate's prestige, with modernization efforts and a move into export markets. Owners of the estate since 1941, the Borie family perpetuates this heritage and love of fine things. Bruno-Eugène Borie, director of the Château, recently launched an ambitious project to sustainably refurbish the vineyards and winery.

The Château Ducru-Beaucaillou estate, nestled in a 5-hectare park, reflects these centuries of history, with its neo-classical architecture and 2 Victorian towers dating from the late 19th century.

Love of the land

Covering 105 hectares in the Saint Julien appellation, the Château Ducru-Beaucaillou vineyard is planted on gravel and quartz pebbles (known as Günzian gravel), which give the estate its name. These "pebbles" are a real asset to the wine-making process, as they retain the heat of the day during the night, protecting the vines from the cold. Proximity to the Gironde estuary is another advantage: it eases winter rigors, moderates summer heatwaves and deflects hail trajectories.

Complementing its advantageous terroir, Château Ducru-Beaucauillou practices high-precision viticulture that is both qualitative and sustainable, relying on a research and development unit to develop alternatives to traditional methods. Mechanical weeding, grassing, the use of manure and compost, a ban on insecticides, ... all these efforts enabled us to obtain level 3 High Environmental Value certification in 2017.

The wines

Rigorous selection of bunches, combined with meticulous sorting of berries in the vat room, result in wines of the highest quality. Aged for 18 months in new oak barrels, with little sulfur added, the domaine's wines are highly refined and have great ageing potential.

The Premier Grand Vin, Château Ducru Beaucaillou, produced in very low volumes (8,000 bottles for the last vintage) is composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Traditional winemaking methods are respected: regular topping-up, racking at the dodge and traditional fining with egg whites. The result is a wine with aromas of black fruits, spices and oak, with present but well-structured tannins.

The Second wine, La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, is a powerful, highly aromatic wine. A Third wine, Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou, completes the range.
