The winemaker
The history of Château du Tertre
The history of Château du Tertre dates back to the 18th century. The estate was formed by the Mitchell family, and the château was built in 1736. The property already included a vineyard. The 1855 classification established Château du Tertre as a Margaux Grand Cru Classé.
The vineyard then covered 52 hectares, and still does today. In 1997, the estate was completely restructured by its new buyer, Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma. In March 2021, Château du Tertre was taken over by the Helfrich family.
The Château du Tertre terroir
Château du Tertre's 52-hectare vineyard is all in one piece, established on very well exposed slopes. The grape varieties are 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape variety in the Margaux appellation, providing structure and concentration. It is seconded by Merlot, whose roundness and suppleness are highly prized. The blends are completed by minority varieties: Cabernet Franc for its rich bouquet of spicy notes and Petit Verdot, which enriches the aromatic palette.
The vines of Château du Tertre are located on one of the highest gravelly hilltops in the Médoc and Margaux appellation. They benefit from generous sunshine, which protects them from late spring frosts. The two croups are separated by a stream that provides natural drainage. The vines are thus protected from drought, without being subjected to excessive humidity.
Respect for the environment
11 hectares of the Château du Tertre vineyard are managed biodynamically, and 41 hectares are under integrated management. Traditional soil cultivation, clawing and ploughing, as well as leaf thinning, remain manual, as do the grape harvests.
The wines of Château du Tertre
Château du Tertre - Grand Cru Classé en 1855 - Margaux red
Château du Tertre - Grand Cru Classé en 1855 - Margaux rouge is the estate's first wine. The wine develops a most harmonious bouquet. It reveals fruity scents of blueberries and raspberries. More mineral notes of gunflint appear, adding complexity to the wine. The palate is saline, followed by crisp tannins. The finish is long, with discreetly recurring mineral touches.
Les Hauts du Tertre AOC Margaux red
Les Hauts du Tertre AOC Margaux red is the second wine of Château du Tertre. Produced from a parcel-by-parcel selection of the youngest vines, it offers a beautiful aromatic complexity with both fruity and spicy notes. Fresh scents, impregnated with a hint of herbs. The palate is particularly lively.
