The winemaker

The history of Glana Castle

Château du Glana was built in 1870, using the methods of the time and of the region, namely the mix between the red of the brick and the white of the limestone. Its founder was Monsieur Cayx, a local notable who called on Monsieur Nadeau, the architect for the town of Blaye, to draw up the plans.
Château du Glana had several owners, before being bought by Gabriel Meffre in 1961. This renowned nurseryman from the Vaucluse worked to expand the vineyard. He then acquired parcels belonging to Château Lagrange, Saint Julien's Third Grand Cru Classé, enabling him to manage a 43-hectare vineyard.
Château du Glana was then taken over by Gabriel Meffre's son, Jean-Paul. Today, Jean-Paul's children, Julien and Ludovic, have joined the business. The estate is growing steadily, and its wines rank among the top Médoc crus classés.
In 2003, a complete restoration of the buildings was undertaken, to complement the restructuring of the vineyard. Everything was revamped: vat room, harvest reception, barrel cellar, offices and reception room.

The Château du Glana vineyard

The Château du Glana vineyard today totals 59.50 hectares, almost all in one piece. It belongs to the AOC Saint Julien. The soil is composed of Garonne gravel.
The vineyard is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the typical Médoc grape variety, responsible for the wine's structure and ageing potential. The 35% Merlot that completes the vineyard gives the wine its fleshiness and roundness. The average age of the vines is 25 years.
Disbudding, leaf-thinning and thinning are carried out by hand. The vineyard is managed on a parcel-by-parcel basis.

The wines of Château du Glana

Château du Glana offers two cuvées. Its first wine, Château du Glana, represents an annual production of 120,000 bottles; its second wine, named Pavillon du Glana, is produced at an average of 60,000 bottles per year.

Château du Glana - Vintage 2019

The 2019 Château du Glana vintage is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot. It is a well-balanced, yet complex wine. It has the advantage of being enjoyed young, but you may well decide to cellar it for up to 10 years.
The wine has a magnificent intense purple color. The nose is full of ripe fruit, with delicious aromas complemented by hints of licorice. The palate is round, still very fruity. Appreciable volume and refined texture.
