The winemaker
Château Dillon, formerly Château Terrefort
The origins of this château date back to the early 17th century. Many owners succeeded one another until 1754. On that date, Robert Dillon, a businessman, bought Château de Terrefort as his country home. He died ten years later, and part of the property was confiscated by the state. There was a succession of owners until 1829. François Seignouret buys the property. A businessman who made his fortune in the United States, he was originally from Bordeaux. In 1830, he set up a wine export business and created the "Château Dillon" brand. He kept the name "Dillon" because the family had fought in the American War of Independence. He introduced new cultivation methods such as planting in rows, ploughing by oxen, rigorous selection of plants... On his death, his widow wished to continue his work and bought additional plots, increasing the estate from the initial seven hectares to 125 hectares in 1890 (52 of which were devoted to vineyards). The Seignouret generations took up the torch until 1956, when the château was sold to the Ministry of Agriculture. Château Dillon has been awarded several environmental certifications: ISO 14001 in 2004 and HVE level 3 certification (biodiversity path - path A) in 2013. The Château's management aims to be a major territorial player in the ecological transition. Since 1969, the Château has been a training center for future vine and wine professionals. Passing on know-how is a fundamental value of this estate, with respect for tradition and nature.
A mosaic of grape varieties for this Medoc vineyard
Of the château's 180 hectares, 40 are devoted to vines: 30 to black varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère) and 2 to white varieties (Sémillon and Sauvignon). The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils dominated by layers of Garonne gravel.
