The winemaker

The history of the estate

The Desmirail name has been linked to the wine world since the late 17th century. Located in the Médoc, Château Desmirail remained a property until the middle of the 19th century, when it was bought by Mr. Sipière, manager of Château Margaux. In 1855, Château Desmirail was classified Third Growth.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the estate passed into the hands of Robert de Mendelssohn, before being bought by Martial Michel. The latter sold the estate on the eve of the Second World War. Bought by the Château Palmer company, the estate was subsequently sold in 1980 to Lucien Lurton, an iconic figure in the Bordeaux wine world.

In 1992, Lucien passed the estate on to his children. The eldest daughter took over the running of the estate, modernizing and developing it to ensure that this grand cru classé continues to shine.

The terroir

Château Desmirail's vineyards lie at the heart of the Margaux appellation, a famous Bordeaux wine-growing region renowned the world over for its fine, elegant Grands Crus.

At the junction of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary, the vineyards benefit from an exceptional terroir and microclimate. The gravelly soils, dating from the Quaternary period, shape the character of this terroir. Gravel is renowned for storing the sun's heat and releasing it to the vines to regulate the water system.

This exceptional terroir is particularly conducive to the development of grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon (which dominates 70% of the cultivated area), Merlot (29%) and Petit Verdot (1%). When blended, each of these three grape varieties brings structure, roundness, fruitiness and tannins to the wines.

In all, the estate extends over some forty hectares, cultivated with respect for the environment according to the principles of sustainable agriculture. Soil and vine treatments, harvesting, vinification and ageing are adapted to the specific characteristics of each year.

The wines

The Château Desmirail is an elegant, tightly woven grand cru. Its deep ruby color is full of generosity. The nose is very gourmand, blending notes of red fruits and spices. On the palate, there are lovely aromas and roundness thanks to the Merlot, which adds suavity.

Ideal for a wide range of meats, such as roast lamb, braised rack of veal or thick prime rib with pan-fried porcini mushrooms.
