The winemaker
Château de Malherbes is a winery located in the commune of Latresne, in the Gironde department of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region. The estate, just outside Bordeaux, produces red and white wines in the Cadillac and Bordeaux appellations.
The Château was founded in the 14th century by Guilhem de Malherbes, a crusading knight whose fate is shrouded in mystery. The estate has changed hands regularly, but the vine has been present from the very beginning. It is the common thread running through the château's history.
When the estate was acquired in 2014, the vineyard took a 180° turn for the better. The work in the vines is meticulous: natural grassing, yield control, sustainable agriculture, etc. The construction of a gravity-fed winery has also made a major contribution to the quality turnaround. From the arrival of the grapes in the cellar to bottling, transfers are carried out by gravity, thanks to the natural gradient of the land. This process is less traumatic for the grapes, resulting in a wine of the highest quality.
Malherbes is above all the energy of a place, a wine and a moment. Through the Malherbes experience, we want you to feel the perfect balance between the dynamics of Bordeaux, the product of a terroir and the links created as a result.
The Château de Malherbes vineyard extends over 12 hectares on the right bank of the Bordeaux vineyards. It consists of a single plot. The terroir is composed of clay and gravel, supported by a clay-limestone subsoil that provides excellent drainage for the vines.
The grape varieties for red wines are 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. For white wines, it's 60% Semillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc. The average age of the vines is around 25 years.
The estate is run as naturally as possible, to limit the inputs required for phytosanitary treatments. Harvesting is done by hand and in crates. Until the grapes are sorted by density to select only the ripest berries, they are stored in a cold room to prevent deterioration.
Château de Malherbes offers its wine in red and white, as well as a cuvée Grand Vin in red.
Malherbes - Grand Vin - AOC Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux Rouge
Château de Malherbes Grand Vin is a blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc.
The wine boasts a magnificent garnet-red color with purplish highlights. Its harmonious nose offers intense aromas of blueberry. The palate is light, marked by the flavors of Merlot. Blackberry, cinnamon and bitter cocoa flavors are combined with dense, powerful tannins.
The wine has an ageing potential of nearly 20 years.
