The winemaker
The Château de Malherbes is a vineyard located in the commune of Latresne, in the Gironde department, in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region. The estate, at the gates of Bordeaux, offers red and white wines, belonging to the Cadillac and Bordeaux appellations.
The Chateau de Malherbes sits in the midst of a magnificent wooded park that extends over a hundred acres. In the middle of the paved road leading to the mansion was erected an obelisk that still welcomes visitors today. The estate is surrounded by a moat, now dry.
Some parts of the building date back to before the 14th century by the knight Guilhem de Malherbes, but the majority of the castle was built during the 18th century. The body was built between 1718 and 1724 by Pierre Vigné de Vigny. He collaborated then with Robert de Cotte, architect of the king.
The outbuildings are numerous. We count there the chapel sheltering the tomb of François de Balzac d'Entragues dating from the XIVth century, the longère (rural house built in length) known as "de Chateaubriand" where lived the brother of one of our most talented authors, an immense dovecote made up of 1 862 boulins (holes made in the wall of the dovecote, (holes in the wall of the dovecote for nesting pigeons) where more than 8,000 pigeons could be housed, a large granary dating back to the end of the 14th century, a 12-meter deep icehouse and a tithe barn used to store the results of the tax collection.
The vineyard of Château de Malherbes extends over 12 hectares on the right bank of the Bordeaux vineyard. It is made up of a single piece of land. Its terroir is composed of clay and gravel, supported by a clay-limestone subsoil that provides excellent drainage favorable to the vine plants.
The grape variety for the red wines is composed of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. For the white wine, it is divided between 60% Semillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc. The average age of the vines is around 25 years.
The estate is run as naturally as possible, in order to limit the inputs necessary for phytosanitary treatments. The grapes are harvested by hand and in crates. While waiting to proceed to a very selective sorting by density, aiming to select only the ripest berries, the bunches are stored in a cold room that prevents their degradation.
Château de Malherbes offers its wine declined in red and white, as well as a Grand Vin cuvée in red.
Malherbes - Grand Vin - AOC Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux Red
The Grand Vin of Château de Malherbes is a blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc.
The wine has a magnificent garnet color with purple highlights. Its harmonious nose offers intense aromas of blueberry. Its mouth is light, marked by the flavors of Merlot. There are blackberries, cinnamon and bitter cocoa flavors, backed by dense and powerful tannins.
The wine offers nearly 20 years of cellaring potential.
