The winemaker

The Miailhe family

The Miailhe family originated in the Tarn et Garonne region. The first family member known to work as a wine broker was Élie, in 1793. The trade was then passed down from generation to generation, until the last broker, Jean Miailhe, ended his activity in 1970.

The Miailhe family's first winemaker was Frédéric, following his marriage in the mid-19th century. His sons, Louis and Édouard, took up the torch.

Their descendant, Jean Miailhe, took over at Coufran and Verdignan. Since the 1980s, his two children, Marie Cécile Vicaire and Éric Miailhe, have taken over both farms.

Château Verdignan

Château Verdignan is a superb 19th-century building facing the Gironde estuary. It is one of the oldest wineries in the canton of Pauillac.

Château Verdignan remained in the same family since the late 18th century, until its purchase in 1934. In the 1940s, a major fire amputated a third of its surface area, but the building still retains its superb appearance.

In 1972, Château Verdignan was bought by Jean Miailhe.

The Château Verdignan vineyard

The Château Verdignan vineyard covers 60 hectares located in the commune of Saint Seurin de Cadourne, neighboring Saint Estèphe. The vineyards around the château cover 40 hectares of magnificent gravelly soil. The Gironde microclimate is extremely favorable to vine-growing.

The grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a touch of Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines in the Graves is around 45 years.

Château Coufran

Château Coufran has had many owners, but the best known is undoubtedly Baron de Brane, nicknamed the "Napoleon of the vines". It was he who came up with the idea of imposing Cabernet as the main grape variety in the Médoc.

Château Coufran was bought by Louis Miailhe in 1924. He changed the name of the estate, which had previously been spelled with two Fs, to Couffran. He restructured the vineyard and planted a majority of Merlot Noir. This grape variety, both rounder and more charming, was widely acclaimed at the time.

Château Coufran has become an essential "Pomerol of the Médoc", as its nickname suggests.

The Château Coufran vineyard

The Château Coufran vineyard comprises 76 hectares of red grape varieties: Merlot (85%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (15%).

The estate is certified Agriculture Respectueuse de l'Environnement en Aquitaine level 2 (AREA) and Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) level 3.
