The winemaker

The same family for nearly a century

The château is located on the hill of Cos, which takes its name from "Caux" meaning "hill of pebbles". It was François Labory who became the owner in 1845: Cos having been detached from Château Cos d'Estournel at the end of the French Revolution. The name was perfect: "Cos Labory". Between 1845 and 1852, two owners succeeded one another before the château was sold to Charles Martyns, an English banker. In 1930, Georges Weber became the owner, then bequeathed the château to his daughter and son-in-law, François Audoy, in 1959. The couple, in love with this terroir, bought the neighboring vineyard Château Andron Blanquet in 1971. Today, their eldest son manages the estate. The Audoy family has gradually modernized the estate, investing in an ultra-modern vat room and a new cellar. Vinification is carried out at low temperature to extract the best from the fruit.

Chateau Cos Labory vineyard characteristics

The 18-hectare terroir is composed of quaternary Günzian gravel on a marl-limestone bedrock. The grape varieties are divided between Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (35%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). The vines have an average age of 35 years, and a high planting density has been chosen. After careful hand-picking, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is then aged in oak barrels (half new, the other half one wine old). Specific care is given to vinification and ageing each year, depending on the vintage. Around one hundred thousand bottles are produced annually. The estate's second wine is "Charme de Cos Labory". The estate also produces "Château Andron Blanquet" and "Le Saint-Estèphe de Cos Labory".

Château Cos Labory, Saint-Estèphe, Grand Cru Classé en 1855

This great Saint-Estèphe is both powerful and delicate. It couldn't be any other way, since it's made from the finest grapes grown on the Cos croup. The Audoy family admits that they never take the easy way out, and that their aim is to offer wines that are "fair, balanced and sincere". Its ageing potential (ideally in the cellar) may exceed fifteen years, depending on the vintage. The palate can be a little austere in its youth, becoming rounder over the years, revealing a beautiful regularity. Tasting it, ideally between 16 and 18°C, you'll appreciate its fruity, spicy and woody aromas. It's the perfect accompaniment to red and white meats, poultry and game.
