The winemaker

The history of the vineyard

Mention of a vineyard at Clinet dates back to the early 17th century. Château Clinet was then owned by the Arnaud family in the 19th century, a family of famous winemakers who also owned Château Pétrus.

The estate underwent a major expansion under the management of Jean-Michel Arcaute in the 1980s. With the support of Michel Rolland, he took the decision to develop the vineyard and the viticultural techniques applied. He implemented unconventional methods such as green harvesting and over-ripe harvesting, and changed the vineyard's grape varieties. Some of the Cabernet Sauvignon was replaced by another grape variety, Merlot. These choices paid off, and the reputation of the estate's wines grew.

Château Clinet was bought in 1998 by Jean Louis Laborde, who continued the viticultural work in the same vein as his predecessor. The estate is now run by his son Ronan.

The terroir

Clinet's vines are planted in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, in old gravel soils, themselves on a clay subsoil with iron dross. Pomerol is a terroir with a climate suited to the cultivation of vines and of great generosity.

Merlot remains the majority grape variety in the vineyard, representing 85% of the vineyard, with the remainder divided between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

One of the oldest vineyards in the appellation is located in Clinet, where "La Vieille Vigne" was planted in 1934.

Skills

Ronan Laborde is developing eco-responsible practices and modernizing the estate's production facilities.

Vinification is carried out on a plot-by-plot basis, in truncated-conical oak vats, and the wine is aged in barrels. Each plot is worked according to its specific needs. The grapes are harvested by hand at over-ripeness.

The quality of our wines reflects the perfect harmony between the terroir and the grape varieties grown at Château Clinet.

The wines

Château Clinet is the estate's flagship cuvée, a luscious red wine with aromas of black fruits, licorice and candied raspberries, with hints of pepper. On the palate, the texture is silky and creamy. It's a fresh, well-balanced, highly aromatic wine. The 2018 vintage is particularly successful; it can be enjoyed young, but it also has exceptional ageing potential.

Fleur de Clinet 2016 is a wine for laying down, with flavors of candied fruit and toasted wood, with a spicy note. It goes wonderfully with game, a cheese platter or quality meats.
