The winemaker

The history of the estate

The origin of Climens goes back to 1547 with a contract of inheritance from the Roborel family that locates the castle in Barsac, in the Sauternes region. The family quickly became Roborel de Climens, and developed a vineyard around the estate for more than two centuries. Damaged by the revolution, the estate was sold in 1802 by the Roborel de Climens family to a Bordeaux merchant, Jean Binaud.

The latter, aware of the value of this vineyard, renovates the vineyard and modernizes it. In 1855, the estate was classified as Premier Cru in the imperial classification. From 1885 and for nearly a century, the estate belongs to a great Bordeaux family who will have kept the estate at the top.

Bought in 1970 by Lucien Lurton, the estate is today in the hands of his daughter, Bérénice Lurton.

The terroir

Located on the left bank of Bordeaux, Chateau Climens is landlocked in a gravelly terroir, southeast of Bordeaux, where the Barsac and Sauternes AOCs dominate. The soils of Chateau Climens are characterized by a strong dominance of limestone, which allows for less opulent, fresher and more aromatically balanced wines than other wines produced in the Sauternes area.

The 30 hectares of vines of the estate have the specificity of having benefited from the deviation of the bed of the Ciron, giving a terroir of eroded gravel, covered with red clayey sands rather than the gravelly alluviums typical of the Graves.

In order to produce the most interesting and tasty wines, the different winemakers who have succeeded each other on the estate have understood that it was necessary to transcend these chalky soils with an earthy grape variety: Semillon. A formidable vector of botrytis cinerea (the famous noble rot), this grape variety evolves perfectly in this micro-climate which is very favorable to the development of noble rot.

Indeed, Barsac is located precisely where the waters of the Ciron, joined by numerous rivers, flow into the Garonne. The ambient fog from this discharge, which is very thick, is often present in the morning before giving way to the afternoon sun, which allows the grapes and their rot to work.

The wines

The Chateau Climens vintage offers a beautiful golden yellow color. Its nose is on a bouquet of rich and complex aromas, between honey, fruits and flowers. In the mouth, we find this jammy and slightly acidic side in young wines. With age, the aromas become more concentrated and we find candied orange or salted butter caramel notes.

The Climens 1er cru classé cuvée stands out with a golden color, quite intense, sometimes pulling towards straw yellow. On the nose, one senses flowers, fresh fruits and exotic fruits, as well as spicy and empyreumatic notes such as cinnamon and vanilla. On the palate, we find this jammy and slightly acidic side in young wines. With age, the aromas become more concentrated and we find candied orange or salted butter caramel notes.
