The winemaker
The French Revolution: history's first turning point
Part of the Seigneurie Lafite estates, the Château was sold as "national property" to the Clerc family in 1789. In 1855, Château Clerc Milon rose to the rank of Cinquième Cru Classé, the elitist classification of Médoc wines. At that time, the estate covered some 30 hectares. In 1910, Baron Philippe de Rotschild was convinced of the wine's incredible potential and bought Château Clerc Milon.
Criteria for the success of Château Clerc Milon
Terroir is of course a key factor: the world's finest wines are produced on the Pauillac terroir. Château Clerc Milon has also benefited from the presence of illustrious neighbors: Château Lafite and Château Mouton. Finally, it was the arrival of Baron Philippe de Rotschild that restored Château Clerc Milon, which had been abandoned in 1970, to its former glory and the title of Grand Cru Classé. In 1983, the Château Clerc Milon label was redesigned: a couple of dancers in precious stones (17th century work). A precious label for a precious wine... When he died in 1988, Baron Philippe had restored Clerc Milon's reputation. Baroness Philippine de Rotschild succeeded her father and was aware of the need to modernize the technical facilities and the estate as a whole in order to continue its development. In 2011, a new vat room is inaugurated. The technical facilities, reception and tasting rooms are in keeping with the estate's reputation. Baroness Philippine de Rotschild continues to work hard to ensure that this renowned Bordeaux château lives up to its reputation.

The slight slope of the 41 hectares of vines is an asset for sun exposure and natural drainage. The nearby river protects the vines from frost and hail. And in summer, the river is an undeniable source of coolness. The high-density vines have the highest average age in the Médoc: 53 years. The soils are predominantly deep sandy gravel. The vineyard is planted with five grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (37%), Cabernet Franc (10%), Petit Verlot (2%) and Carménère (1%). Here, integrated viticulture is the rule, with the use of pesticides kept to a minimum. This is a wine with great ageing potential. The combination of terroir characteristics and grape varieties results in a wine that is tannic, powerful, harmonious and fruity - in short, all the characteristics of the most illustrious Pauillac wines. Let's not forget to mention "Pastourelle de Clerc Milon", the Château's second wine. It's a round, supple wine that seduces with its rich aromas.
