The history of Château Clément-Pichon
In the 14th century, Château Clément-Pichon was known as La Motte Caupène, then Château de Parempuyre. From 1601 to 1880, it belonged to the Pichon family, then to various owners before being bought by Clément Fayat in 1976. This entrepreneur - owner of the eponymous public works group - has a keen interest in viticulture and already owns Château La Dominique, Saint Émilion Grand Cru Classé, as well as Château Fayat in Pomerol. Château Pichon has been listed as a historic monument since June 16, 2000. Since 2012, Clément Fayat's son Jean-Claude has taken over the management of Château Clément-Pichon.
The Château Clément-Pichon vineyard
The Château Clément-Pichon vineyard covers 25 hectares. When it was purchased in 1976, the new owner undertook a complete restoration of the vineyard, devoting 70% of its surface to Merlot, an exception in the Médoc terroir. The rest of the estate is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 30 years, and average annual production is 120,000 bottles.
The vineyards of Château Clément Pichon are managed as naturally as possible. The grapes are harvested by hand. The bunches are first sorted in the vineyard. They are then transported to the vat room in wooden containers specifically designed for transporting grapes, known as bastes. Here, the bunches are again sorted on a table, before being completely destemmed.
The Château Clément-Pichon wine
Since the 2018 vintage, Château Clément Pichon wine has been classified as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur rouge, belonging to the Haut Médoc appellation. It is made from a blend of the estate's three grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
