The winemaker

The history of the winery

The estate belonged to the Donissan de Citran family from the 13th to the mid-19th century. Several owners then succeeded each other. They replanted the land, restored the buildings and made important investments. The majority of the vines are Cabernet-Sauvignon, which covers nearly two thirds of the land. The second grape variety of the estate is Merlot.

In 1996, the Merlaud family bought the Château, bringing their experience as experienced Bordeaux winegrowers and allowing it to join the elite of the Haut-Médoc crus.

The estate has prospered ever since, respecting its history. The château became a historical monument in 2012. The current owners continue to renovate, notably to improve the plots with new plantings, and rely on a team of experts to make ever more elegant and qualitative wines.

Sustainable and reasoned viticulture

Each parcel is cared for according to its own specificities. The work of the land is thus adapted according to the needs. Some are worked with conventional farming methods, including mechanical soil work and conventional treatments. Others benefit from care aimed at improving the structure of the soil with seeding by plant cover. One third of the estate is organically farmed.

The work in the vineyards is carried out in collaboration with the best winegrowers, professionals trained in modern viticulture techniques and also mastering ancestral know-how. The selection of the barrels is made by the best coopers. The choice is made for oak wood to reinforce the structure of the wine and to bring a palette of complex aromas. The maturation lasts 15 months. The château also carries out the bottling itself.

The wines of Château Citran

Chateau Citran

This red wine with a clear color and beautiful intensity is in the Haut Médoc appellation. It is a balanced, fruity and fresh wine with woody aromas, both sweet thanks to the Merlot and elegant with the Cabernets.

Citran Mills

This supple, round wine from the Haut Médoc appellation has aromas of vanilla with notes of ripe fruit. It is blended with one-third Cabernet Sauvignon and two-thirds Merlot. It can be consumed quickly, but will express its full potential after aging four or five years. The 2010 vintage benefited from optimal weather conditions and is particularly successful.

The Citran Rose

This is a balanced, fresh wine with good structure and aromas of red fruits and citrus. It is perfect as an aperitif, with sorbets or to accompany grilled meats.
