The winemaker
Cantenac Brown, an origin from Scotland!
In 1754, an equerry of the King created a wine estate in the commune of Cantenac. In 1806, John-Lewis Brown, a Frenchman with Scottish roots, bought this land, then new vines, and initiated the construction of Château Cantenac Brown. Passionate and visionary, he knew how to identify the best terroirs. In 1855, Château Cantenac Brown became the third Grand Cru Classé in the Margaux appellation, the most prestigious in the Médoc. From 1843 onwards, a succession of owners followed, including Louis Armand in 1860, who enlarged the estate, preserving the Tudor style. Since 2019, the Le Lous family has been at the helm of the estate, ensuring respect for the terroir and maintaining excellence while imposing environmental priorities.
Values of Château Cantenac Brown
Such quality is not the result of chance. It's the result of the work of a team of enthusiasts, faithful to the legacy of John-Lewis Brown. The 30 members of the "Clan Cantenac" are creative, crafting these wines with the precision of a goldsmith. Over the last ten years, this team has developed the vintages with respect for tradition. Well aware of the absolute necessity of preserving this exceptional land, the whole team participates in a certified environmental approach. It is in this spirit that the construction of a new winery is planned for 2020: using natural elements and building an eco-responsible winery in raw earth.
A project unique in the world that will guarantee perfect hygrometry and thermal inertia. It's clear that love and respect for nature have always been core values at Château Cantenac Brown. John-Lewis Brown planted an arboretum on his arrival, which has been enriched over the years by the addition of rare species. The estate is maintained by eco-grazing. Beehives have been installed and the Château is proud to produce its own honey: L'Or de Cantenac Brown.
Chateau Cantenac Brown wine characteristics
The estate produces 3 wines thanks to the distribution of its vines on the Margaux and Cantenac plateaux. The soils are gravel and clay-limestone. The blends would not be as rich and diverse without this plurality of terroirs. Château Cantenac Brown, Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is a red wine for laying down. Its blend is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot.Brio de Cantenac Brown, another of the estate's red wines, is ideally suited to ageing. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc make up its blend. Alto de Cantenac Brown is the estate's white wine, composed of Sauvignon Blanc (90%) and Sémillon (10%).
Treat yourself to a visit to Château Cantenac Brown and taste its delicious nectars as you stroll through the gardens, a strange blend of modernity and the sensation of time standing still...
