The winemaker

Three families have succeeded one another at the head of Château Brillette

It was by marrying a Le Blanc Mauvezin daughter, after the French Revolution (1796), that Jean-Baptiste Germain du Périer de Larsan took over as head of Brillette. It would take a century for the Périer de Larsans to give Château Brillette unprecedented renown, well beyond the Médoc's borders, in keeping with the family motto "Neither vanity nor weakness". Brillette was awarded a gold medal and the Diplôme d'Honneur at two world fairs. In 1932, Château Brillette du Périer was classified Cru Bourgeois Supérieur.

The Montesquiou David-Weill family took over, eventually selling the estate to the Flageul family, who have managed it since 1975. The new generation continues to pursue the path of excellence, with a firm commitment to the protection of nature. This unwavering commitment enabled Château Brillette to receive the highest level of environmental certification (HVE-3) in 2018, as well as the Trophée des Vignobles Engagés a year later.

Chateau Brillette's terroir rests on gravelly soil

A gravelly soil is made up of pebbles, gravel and partly clayey sands. The story goes that it was the brilliance of these pebbles in the sunlight that gave the estate its name! The 45 hectares of vineyards at Domaine de Brillette are planted in a single block, with three grape varieties: 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 28 years. Depending on the vines, harvesting is either manual or mechanical. This not only protects the most sensitive vines, but also enables us to hand-pick the most beautiful bunches before harvesting. But the tailor-made approach doesn't stop there! Each vat is allocated to a specific parcel of land, so that vinification techniques respect the characteristics of each terroir. The wines are aged in oak barrels for 12 to 16 months.

Discover the range of Château Brillette wines

Château Brillette is the estate's first wine. Its ageing potential ranges from 5 to over 20 years, depending on the vintage. Black fruit, spice and wood are the hallmarks of this terroir-driven wine. Haut de Brillette is made from young vines. It's a wine to be drunk young to appreciate all its freshness. Brin de Brillette, the latest addition (2018) is in line with the estate's environmental approach: lighter bottle for better recycling, labels printed with water-based ink, vegetable wax capsule... Brin de Brillette is intended to be "simpler" and is a hit at convivial evenings with friends. All can be stored at between 10 and 13°C, and are best served at 15°C.
