The winemaker

The history of Château Beychevelle

Château de Beychevelle, nicknamed "the Versailles of the Médoc", was built in the 17th century and then rebuilt in 1757 by the Marquis de Brassier. Its transformation was completed by restoration work in the late 20th century. Beychevelle was the fiefdom of the Dukes of Épernon, especially the first, Jean Louis Nogaret de La Valette.

The latter was a powerful man. According to legend, ships passing through his castle had to lower their sails as a sign of loyalty. Hence the name "Beychevelle", meaning "Lower Sail". The château's emblem is also taken from this famous legend, a ship with the prow of a griffin, guardian of the wine crater of Dionysus in Greek mythology.

The vineyard

Château Beychevelle's land covers 250 hectares. Only 90 are used for vines. The rest is meadow and forest. The vineyards are planted with vines that are on average 30 years old. These vines have developed a vital root system that enables them to absorb nutrients deep down. But also to cope with climatic conditions that can be difficult, especially with the heat of summer. Château Beychevelle's vineyards are planted with the four noble Médoc grape varieties: 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot.

Hand-picked, the best grapes are sorted and harvested before being blended into the wines. These wines are deep red, yet balanced and generous.
