The winemaker

Château Belair's vineyards are planted on a diversified terroir, composed mainly of clay-limestone slopes and a limestone plateau with asteria located beneath former quarries. The vineyard has grown from 11 to 12.5 hectares during the various classifications, then to 24 hectares as of the 2012 vintage (contribution of Château La Magdelaine). The vines are 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 40 years, planted at a density of 6,500 vines/ha. The grapes are harvested by hand in crates, then sorted on optical tables. When Guyenne was English (14th century), the château was owned by the Grand Seneschal and Governor of Guyenne, Sir Robert de Knolles. A century later, when Charles VII reconquered Guyenne, the descendants of Robert de Knolles remained in the region and Frenchified their name to Canolle. The estate, called "Cru de Canolle", then Bélair, belonged to them until the French Revolution, when the Dubois-Challon family, purchasers in 1916, confirmed the name Château Bélair. Madame Dubois-Challon died in 2003, giving all her property to Mr. Delbeck. In 2008, Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix acquired this historic site. In memory of Anne-Adèle Monange, wife of Jean Moueix, and the first female member of the family to settle in Saint-Emilion in 1931, the estate was renamed Château Bélair-Monange for the 2008 vintage.
