The winemaker
Château Barreyres is located between the Gironde estuary and the village of Arcins, in the heart of the Haut Médoc appellation. Acquired by the Castel family in 1971, this Haut Médoc cru bourgeois is one of the region's jewels, and the estate's wines - balanced, supple, elegant Bordeaux superiors - have made a major contribution to the reputation of Gironde wines.
The estate covers 240 hectares, with meadows, forests and, of course, vines. The 100-hectare vineyard is planted mainly with red grape varieties, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Only half a hectare is planted with white grapes, with Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc in equal proportions.
The soil is made up of fine Pyrenean gravel, making it draining and able to retain heat, and the vineyard has excellent exposure. This gives it ideal conditions for ripening grapes.
The 19th-century mansion has been completely restored and now hosts prestigious receptions. The vineyard facilities have also benefited from major investment. In particular, the estate boasts a magnificent cathedral cellar, with capacity for 1,600 barrels. Made from oak, one-third of the barrels are renewed each year. Thermo-regulated vats ensure complete control over vinification.
This rigorous work has been rewarded with numerous distinctions, reinforcing the reputation of excellence of this Haut Médoc Cru.
The Château Barreyres is the estate's first wine, a seductive Bordeaux combining power and suppleness. The nose is fruity with aromas of redcurrants, vanilla and spicy notes. The palate offers a long finish. Oenologist Antoine Médeville, a specialist in the region's terroirs, has been contributing his expertise to the production of this cuvée since 2007.
Le Château Tour Bellevue is the estate's second wine, made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The nose offers a fruity aromatic palette with notes of red fruits, which may evolve with a few years towards more woody aromas. This is a well-balanced, gourmet wine with hints of cocoa, a good choice to accompany red meats such as lamb, beef or even game.
Chateau Fougey is a round, warm wine from the estate's younger vines. It is made with a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The aromatic bouquet blends fruit and spice, and this cuvée shows its full potential after a few years in the cellar.
