The winemaker
The history of the estate
Located in the heights of Saint-Emilion, Chateau Balestard la Tonnelle features a 15th century watchtower, which appears to be its oldest vestige. Present since the 16th century in the commune of Saint-Emilion, the Capdemourlin family has been involved in winegrowing since that date.
The family's vineyards are composed of Château Balestard la Tonnelle (Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé), Château Cap de Mourlin (Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé) and Château Roudier (Montagne Saint-Emilion). Today, it is the twelfth and thirteenth generation of Capdemourlin who manage Château Balestard la Tonnelle.
Chateau Balestard la Tonnelle is a grand cru classé in the Saint-Emilion wine classification.
The terroir
Located in the northeastern part of Saint-Emilion, in its heights, the estate of Chateau Balestard la Tonnelle benefits from a particular terroir, on a clay-limestone plateau. On the rock culminating the heights of the town, the vineyard overlooks fields of vines as far as the eye can see.
Covering 10.5 hectares of vineyards, the vineyard is a mixture of fine-textured brown limestone soil, fine-textured brown calcium soil and heavy clay-limestone soil. Each soil contributes its soil to the building in shaping the typicity of the wines.
Planted with Merlot (67%), Cabernet Sauvignon (23%) and Cabernet Franc (10%), the estate can thus produce typical Saint-Emilion wines. The Merlot gives roundness and smoothness to the wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure and power to the wines, as well as notes of leather and musk on the evolution. Finally, the Cabernet Franc develops fruity and floral aromas, even vegetal, it also brings tannins.
Chateau Balestard la Tonnelle, it is an integral part of Saint-Emilion, classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO as a cultural landscape, reflecting a historic wine landscape.
The wines
The wines produced by the estate are typical of the Saint-Emilion appellation and are the result of a meticulous blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The estate's first wine, the Château Balestard la Tonnelle offers a ruby hue with purplish tints, which dull with age. The nose gives off very concentrated fruity aromas, and a broad aromatic palette including leather and vanilla due to the barrel aging. Round and powerful, the mouth also reveals a seductive bouquet with melted tannins.
