The appellation's main grape varieties are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. These 3 grape varieties must account for at least 80% of the blend. Merlot produces wines with intense color and aromas of red or black fruit.
The 1999 vintage was looking good overall, with quality and quantity. But once again, a violent storm on September 5 wiped out 10% of St Emilion. The situation in the other appellations was no better, but the winemakers were able to save the ripe grapes thanks to the September sunshine. The winemaker's hard work will be recognized by the wine's structure.
