Appellation Canon-Fronsac
The Canon-Fronsac AOC, a land of great wines
The appellation located in the west of the Libournais region is separated from the appellation of Saint-Emilion by the Pomerol plateau...it therefore extends over a terroir conducive to the production of very great wines.
30 kilometres from Bordeaux, between the Dordogne and Isle rivers, the AOC Canon-Fronsac produces exclusively red wines, made from the following grape varieties: mainly merlot, but also cabernet sauvignon, côt, malbec and merlot.
Nevertheless, this has not always been the case. In fact, the grape varieties of the Fronsadais region underwent a radical transition in the 20th century. The majority grape variety was then Malbec, but too sensitive to frost, it was replaced in favour of the more resistant Merlot. The latter now covers 75% of the 280 hectares of the appellation.
The vineyard enjoys a temperate oceanic climate, a fairly mild climate that is very beneficial for the vines. These are moreover planted on clay-limestone soils, and on the famous "molasse du fronsadais", which characterises the slopes that favour drainage.
AOC Canon-Fronsac, wines of character
The wines of the appellation are exclusively red, and they are wines for laying down. They offer a beautiful ruby red colour, sometimes garnet, crossed by purple reflections. Their nose diffuses scents of red fruits such as raspberry, strawberry and redcurrant, and spicy perfumes One also notices woody notes that come from barrel ageing. With age, the nose develops leather and mocha scents.
On the palate, the red Canon-Fronsac wines offer a perfect balance between tannins and fruit, they are powerful, fat and have a beautiful velvety flavour. The red wines bearing this appellation go very well with grilled entrecote, game, lamb tajine with spices, pasta with chorizo or even recipes with mushrooms or cheeses such as Camembert and Saint Nectaire.
