The winemaker

The history of Borie-Manoux

Borie-Manoux was founded in 1870. It then bore the name Eugène Borie Frères. It took its final name of Borie-Manoux at the end of the Second World War, when the two Borie brothers, Marcel and Francis, separated.

While he took over the business, Marcel decided to move Borie-Manoux, then in Pauillac, to Bordeaux. He kept the management of the business until 1961. He then handed it over to his son-in-law, Emile Casteja. The latter added the Chapelle de la Trinité and Beau Rivage brands to the Borie-Manoux fold.

Since 1990, Philippe Casteja has succeeded his father at the head of the Borie-Manoux house. As a winegrower, he manages the Pomerol and Saint-Emilion properties and at the same time pursues an activity as a wine merchant under the name Borie-Manoux.

Borie-Manoux's properties and châteaux

Château Batailley is the cradle of the Borie family, but each generation has added its stone to the edifice and the heritage is now much more substantial. The properties and château of Borie-Manoux are :

Château Trotte Vieille, Premier Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion, since 1950 ;

Château Beau-Site Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Saint-Estèphe, since 1955;

Château Haut-Bages Monpelou Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Pauillac, since 1970 ;

Château du Domaine de l'Eglise, Pomerol, since 1973;

Château la Croix du Casse, Pomerol, since 2005.

All Borie-Manoux properties and châteaux are committed to responsible and organic farming. Borie-Manoux has also bought out Bordeaux wine merchants and trading houses including Henri Moreau, Turpin Frères and Albert Duverger. The company also manages a storage unit located in Bordeaux itself, which covers 3 hectares. Since 1986, it has also acquired a majority stake in a Loire producer and merchant based in Vallet, Drouet Frères.

Château Batailley

Given the number of estates operated, it is impossible to choose among the many wines of the house of Borie-Manoux. Let's take the most emblematic, from the Borie family's Château, Batailley.

Château Batailley is a fifth Grand Cru Classé AOC Pauillac in 1855. The estate takes its name from a battle that took place on its land, already covered with vines, in 1453. It was the middle of the Hundred Years War and the French were fighting hard against the English.

The AOC Pauillac Château Batailley is a red wine with a dark ruby colour. It is a very robust and powerful wine. The nose is intense, full of red fruits. The attack in the mouth is frank and lively. Red fruits are present, with a dominant of blackcurrant. The finish is deliciously prolonged with full-bodied tannins
