Appellation Bordeaux Supérieur

Bordeaux Supérieur, an appellation with demanding criteria

The Bordeaux Supérieur AOC covers 502 communes in the Bordeaux vineyards, in particular the wine-growing regions of Médoc, Graves, Entre-Deux-Mers, Sauternes, Libourne and finally Blaye-Bourg. To obtain this appellation, the wines must meet very strict conditions: the vines from which the wines are produced must be old, and the wines must be aged for a minimum of 12 months before being marketed. These criteria apply to both red and white wines. The grape varieties most commonly used in making red Bordeaux Supérieur are cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, malbec, carmenère, merlot and petit verdot. For the whites, we find mostly semillon, sauvignon and muscadelle.

The Bordeaux Supérieur appellation benefits from an oceanic climate, characterised by mild winters and relatively cool summer temperatures, and enjoys different soil types, mostly clay and gravel soils, but also limestone and sandy soils.

One appellation, two colours

The Bordeaux Supérieurs appellation is carried by red and white wines. Nevertheless, the production of red wines represents more than 95% of the total production of AOC Bordeaux Supérieurs.

The AOC Bordeaux Supérieur Rouge

Bordeaux Supérieur reds have a brilliant ruby colour, they are characterised by aromas of red and black fruits such as blackcurrant and blackberry, as well as floral scents, violet in particular. As they get older, the nose of red Bordeaux Supérieur will be more marked by leather, mushrooms and woody and vanilla notes. On the palate, they are complex and develop quite strong tannins, finishing with roasted notes. They pair perfectly with grilled red meats.

The AOC Bordeaux Supérieur White

. The colour of white Bordeaux Supérieur wines is golden yellow, sometimes with green highlights. The nose is characterised by scents of white flowers, candied exotic fruits, and the sauvignon brings citrus notes. This wine has a rich and smooth mouthfeel, balanced and often defined by honey and toasty notes. It will go very well with white fish, pasta with pesto or mature goat's cheese.
