Appellation Bordeaux-Côtes-de-Francs

The Francs Côtes-de-Bordeaux AOC: the origins of the name date back to the 6th century

The appellation, located 10km east of Saint-Emilion, is located in the communes of Francs, Saint-Cibard and Tayac. The name Francs is said to have originated in the 6th century. Indeed, when Clovis, the first king of the Franks, won the battle of Vouillé in 507, he seized Aquitaine and created a detachment of the Frankish army in a place called in Latin Ad francos, which became Francs.

Spread over 510 hectares, the AOC Francs Côtes-de-Bordeaux is one of the smallest appellations in Bordeaux. The climate is continental; winters are harsh and summers are hot. Situated on hills and slopes, the vines enjoy chalky-clay soils and marl, which give the wines a deep colour.

The grape varieties used to produce the red wines are merlot, cabernet-sauvignon and cabernet franc. The semillon, muscadelle and sauvignon are used in the composition of the white wines of the appellation.
